Tips To Diagnose And Fix A Slow Running Computer (Part 1)

Working as a system support, I come across many peoples who always complain that their computer turns very slow comparing to the time when they just bought it and I realized that 8 out of 10 who brought their PC or laptop to me face some common problems.

Today, I would like to share with you the common problems that cause their computer to slow down and provide some DIY solutions so that you can fix it yourself at your convenience if you too face the same problems.

1. Computer infected with Virus, Spyware or Malware
In Singapore, most of the people here use their computers for internet surfing, online chatting, emails and so on and all these internet activities easily cause computer to get infected by Virus, Spyware or Malware.

Due to many users here refuse to pay the yearly Subscription for the Antivirus, Antispyware or Antimalware update, they left the computer unprotected and not knowing that once their PC get infected, it will not only cause the computer to slow down, it may also corrupt or delete data in the computer and worse, spread the virus to other computers through e-mail or even delete certain files on the hard disk that cause the computer to malfuction.

Here, I would like to recommend some DIY tips that you can clean and protect your computer without paying a single cent.

Step 1
Set your internet explorer to automatically delete or empty the browser temporary files, history, cookies, saved passwords, web form information and Temporary Internet File Folder when you exit your browser.

Open up your Internet Explorer,
Select Tools from the Menu Bar, Select Internet Options,
Click on the General Tap, Under the Browsing History Category,
place a tick beside the "Delete Browsing History On Exit",
Click on the "Delete" button and make sure that there is a tick beside all items.
(Note: If you do not want the browser to delete the stored Password, please remove the tick beside "Passwords") and Click on the "Delete" Button.

Finished ? Now Click on the Advanced Tap, Scroll down to Security Category, and place a Tick beside the "Empty Temporary Internet File Folder When Browser is Closed", click the OK button and it's done.

Step 2

http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx.
A free downloadable security tool that provides on-demand scanning and helps remove viruses, spyware, and other malicious software by Microsoft.
No installation needed, just download and run it.

Step 3
Download Microsoft Security Essentials from
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/security_essentials/default.aspx
(Click on the "Download it free* today" icon on the top right to start the download).
This is a free real-time protection software that guards against viruses, spyware, and other malicious software. It is free from Microsoft and is simple to install, easy to use, and is automatically updated to protect your PC with the latest technology.

Note:
If you have any expired Antivirus, Antispyware or Antimalware, I suggest that you removed it first, restart you computer before you install the Microsoft Security Essential.

Step 4
Download Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=ad724ae0-e72d-4f54-9ab3-75b8eb148356.
This tool checks your computer for infection by specific, prevalent malicious software (including Blaster, Sasser, and Mydoom) and helps to remove the infection if it is found.
Just download and run it, no installation require.

Note:
Microsoft will release an updated version of this tool on the second Tuesday of each month. If you have enable your Windows Update to Automatic Updates it will download by itself.

Step 5
Download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware from CNET Downloads

Tips To Diagnose And Fix A Slow Running Computer (Part 2)

On my last post, "Tips To Diagnose And Fix Slow Running Computer (Part 1)", I have recommended some free tips and Security Tool to remove and protect your computer against Virus, Spyware and Malware that might be harmful to your system.

Today, I am going to move a step further to share with you some computer maintenance tips that you can DIY to make your computer run even faster and smoother other then buying more memory (RAM) or getting angry thinking that your computer is getting old and there's nothing else you can do, then to replace it.

2. Optimize Your Computer for Better Performance

Another common issue with some of my users is they have zero knowledge on basic computer maintenance, hence there is no maintenance done since the day they brought their computer.

Using Computer is just like driving a car, a car without maintenance will break down more often then car with maintenance. Therefore, if you want your computer to stay fast and healthy, it is recommended that you create a preventive PC maintenance plan, at least twice a month to maintain your PC with some basic task.

Here we go :

Step 1,
Remove away Programs or Games that you no longer need or play.

Removing a program is not that difficult as what you think, what you have to do is:
Click the Start button and Select Control Panel,
Double Click the "Add or Remove Programs" icon for XP or "Programs and Features" icon for Vista & Windows7.
Here you can find all the programs which are installed in your Computer,
To remove any of them, click once on the program you want to uninstall and then click on Uninstall/Change and follow the prompts.

Step 2,
Empty your recycle bin

Step 3
Defragment (Defrag) your computer follow by a Check Disk to ensure that your hard disk are errors free.

Step 4
Fix registry errors

You must be wondering why I did not elaborate further for Step 2~4, right ?
No worries, it's because I have found a very powerful free software that can do all that for you in just a click.

Download Advanced SystemCare Free 4 from CNET.COM
http://download.cnet.com/Advanced-SystemCare-Free/3000-2086_4-10407614.html?part=dl-6271865&subj=dl&tag=button
Note: During the installation, you will be prompt to install "IObit Malware Fighter", "Game Booster" and "Smart Defrag", some free programs that attached to the installation of Advanced SystemCare. For my case, I removed the tick as I do not want any other programs to be installed in my computer but if you are keen to try out these applications, just leave the tick there and click on the "Install" button to continue the installation.

After the installation completed, Advanced SystemCare will start by itself, just click on the "Deep Care" button, follow by the "Scan Now" button, it will start to scan and diagnose your computer for errors. Once the scan completed, just click on the "Repair Now" button, sit back and every thing will be done by itself.

Recommendation:
For the first time, I suggest that you repeat to scan for the errors after the repair completed until the errors completely fix.

Well, that all for the day, please feel free to recommend this blog to your friends if you find the tips here are useful.

Troubleshoot HP Business Inkjet 1200 Printing Problem

Today, we hit a very abnormal but very interesting troubleshooting case.

As reported by one of our end user complaining that her HP Business Inkjet 1200 printer keep feeding papers after the first page printed.

Technician has been deployed to diagnose the problem, they tried:

Turning the printer on and off,
Reinstalled the printer driver,
Change the USB cable, etc.. etc ...

but nothing helps.

I attended to the site personally to check the problem.

Did a test print from the printer properties, everything looks perfect.

So, tried sent print an 8 pages spreadsheet from Microsoft Excel, problem hit again. After printing the first page, the printer feed 2 blank papers, then pause for a couple of minutes, page 2 was printed, feed another 3 blank papers, printer pause again and so on....., sometime, it will even prompt you print head error.

Thought could be the USB port connection problem, so pulled out the USB cable and bingo! The power supply of the printer was being cut off!

Immediately, I check the power adaptor but the indicator light is still on. To confirm that the problem is really due to the power adaptor faulty, I plug the USB cable back to the printer and turn off the switch of the power socket. As expected, the printer power supply did not cut off.

I think the conclusion is the power adaptor was out of order and the printer relies on the USB power to power up and print. But unfortunately, the USB power supply is not sufficient enough to support the spooling of multi pages printing, therefore causes the problem to occur.

Never hit such cases before and it really surprised me.

So if you hit cases like this in future, try pulling out the USB cable first and if the power cuts off, you don’t have to go through the rest of the test.

Cheers !

Help ! I Couldn't Open Files Created Using Office2007/2010 Applications In Office PC

Microsoft has moved so fast that it only takes a couple of years for them to jump from Office2003 to Office2010.

We often hit problems like files created using Office2007/2010 Applications from home, unable to open in computer running Office2003 Applications in office.

To help ensure that you can exchange documents between Microsoft Office releases, Microsoft has developed a Compatibility Pack for the Office Word, Office Excel, and Office PowerPoint 2007/2010 File Formats.

What you have to do is very simple,

Just download the Compatibility Pack from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?familyid=941B3470-3AE9-4AEE-8F43-C6BB74CD1466&displaylang=en
Install it to the computer running Microsoft OfficeXP or Office2003 and now you should be able open, edit and save the files without fail.

Enjoy.
